America's fertility rate fell to a record low in 2023, with just 54.5 babies born for every 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 β€” but on the state level, the figures vary considerably.

Using CDC data, USAFacts mapped the fertility rate of each US state, as well as the states where rates have decreased the most.

In 2022, South Dakota had the highest fertility rate overall (66.5 births per 1,000 women), followed by Alaska (64.9) and Nebraska (63.6).

The lowest fertility rates were found in Oregon (47.3), Delaware (44.9) and Vermont (44.3).

Fertility rates fell in every US state between 2005 and 2022, but Utah experienced the biggest decline overall. The number of births per 1,000 women dropped from 92.8 to just 61.3 in the Beehive State β€” a decrease of 33.9 percent over less than two decades.

Arizona (-31.9 percent), and Delaware (-31.2 percent) also saw their fertility rates drop dramatically over the same period.
